Billboard - Gwen Stefani Premieres Heartbreaking Video for Breakup Song 'Used to Love You'

Gwen Stefani is turning to music to get over heartbreak.

The woman who made us all cry in the '90s with "Don't Speak," Tragic Kingdom and more, returns to sadness once again in her newest solo tune, "Used to Love You."

"I don't know why I cry but I think it's cause I remember for the first time since I hated you that I used to love you," Stefani croons in the heartbreaking chorus. Stefani, of course, has been having a more challenging time in her personal life lately; she and long-time husband Gavin Rossdale announced they were separating this past summer.

The video for the song features a profile shot of Stefani close to the camera, as she alternates between singing along to the tune and just plain looking devastated.

Watch it below and try not to cry.

Song of the week: Gwen Stefani, 'Used To Love You'

Gwen Stefani has shape-shifted many times over her career, morphing from a bindi-wearing SoCal punk to a Harajuku girl to the grown-up, Voice-hosting pop star we know her as today. Through all her costume changes, Stefani's always kept her cool, projecting an impenetrable aura that's helped her keep reinventing herself with each passing decade.

But on occasion, when Stefani drops the sneering gaze and lets the audience peek into her inner anguish, it results in some of the strongest songs of her career. On Used To Love You, released on the heels of her separation from Gavin Rossdale, Gwen's idiosyncratic voice wrestles with the starkly emotional lyrics, telling a story of betrayal in yelps and wails.

The song's spiritual sibling is another of Stefani's best works: 1996's No Doubt classic Don't Speak, written about another love gone sour. But this time around, coming from a more mature artist with fewer things to prove, the pain feels dizzyingly fresh.
