Billboard - Gwen Stefani Opens Up About Divorce & New Song

Gwen Stefani is feeling pretty good these days.

Her new single "Used to Love You" is taking off on the charts, and the singer couldn't be more excited. "Can I just say before we get going, I cant believe Im here right now," she shared on Z100 Thursday morning (Dec. 3). "I cannot believe how rad and magical my life is. I woke up and Im No. 5 on iTunes this morning with Used to Love You, which is like a true miracle to have a song that is so reflecting this crazy, crazy year for me and I just can believe Im going to be on the radio and Im here right now and that this is happening! Can you pinch me? ... I just wanted to say it because it doesnt sink in, its just so insane!"

She also opened up about her divorce from Gavin Rossdale and how that's affected her music. "I went into the studio, and everybody knows pretty much what happened to me," she said. "I got a divorce or whatever, which completely was not in the plan at all. For me, it surely wasnt and [it was] a shock and a horrible, crazy explosion in my life. At that time, I was like, I wanted to go in and write and I had a plan to make a record and I made a record the year before really, but I hadnt written it. I just had the baby, it was the time with Pharrell, I started The Voice. I did Baby Dont Lie, which is interesting how those lyrics worked out to be like a precursor to the future. Its crazy how I just didnt feel comfortable not writing my record, it didnt feel right. It wasnt time!

"Then all of a sudden I went in and it was one of those things where I had to force myself to go to the studio because I really just wanted to be in bed crying and do what you do when your life falls apart and I didnt. One of my girlfriends Sophie Muller, who does a lot of my creative stuff with me, she did my Used to Love You video and Dont Speak and shes one of my best friends. I dont know what it was but she was with me the whole time during this whole thing, I mean literally FaceTime wherever she was in the world. One of those people where youre like, How are you that great? How are you that great of a friend to me? So I went to the studio and I was just convinced that I had to make something out of this. Theres no way, Im not going to go online and waste my time, Im going to do something creative. So I went to the studio and started writing. Well I wrote my first song and it was like a little rosebud just blossoming, and I was like, Wow! Its happening I can do this! I know that every time I go into the studio Im going to write a song and its the most incredible feeling. Literally there is nothing like writing a song! Its like you have to be in the room to see it happen because even the people writing it that are doing it all the time are like, Woah! Thats a good one!

Adele Dominates Billboard Artist 100 Chart

Thanks to the record-shattering start of '25,' Adele crushes the competition on Billboard's weekly artist survey.

In perhaps one of the least chart surprising finishes, given her record-smashing sales week, Adele is the No. 1 musical act in the U.S., rebounding 3-1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated Dec. 12).

The Artist 100 measures artist activity across Billboard's most influential charts, including the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, Top Album Sales and the Social 50. The Artist 100 blends data measuring album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

Adele returns to the top of the Artist 100 for a third total week with a more than three-to-one lead in points over runner-up Justin Bieber (1-2). Adele logs a 646 percent vault in overall activity, with album sales marking her greatest metric (81 percent), as 25 rockets onto Top Album Sales at No. 1 with a one-week-record 3.38 million sold. Adele's prior albums 21 and 19 also contribute to her Artist 100 total, soaring to Nos. 9 (34,000) and 19 (20,000) on Top Album Sales, respectively.

Adele's Historic '25' Debut: By the Numbers

Digital song sales (12 percent), streaming (4 percent), radio airplay (2 percent) and social reaction (1 percent) account for the remainder of Adele's Artist 100 contributors.

Below Adele and Bieber, Drake (4-3), The Weeknd (5-4) and One Direction (2-5) round out the Artist 100's top five.

Among moves further down the chart, Gwen Stefani appears on the Artist 100 for the first time in more than a year. She returns at No. 82 as "Used to Love You" logs a 162 percent increase to 29,000 sold (and re-enters the Hot 100 at No. 77, a new high) after she performed the song on the American Music Awards Nov. 22.

Stefani was, of course, moonlighting on the AMAs from her regular role as coach on NBC's The Voice, and one of this season's hopefuls on the latter joins her on the Artist 100: Amy Vachal (mentored by Adam Levine, not Stefani, on The Voice) enters at No. 89. Vachal bows with all of her chart points from digital song sales, as her cover of Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" enters Digital Songs at No. 24 with 38,000 sold, marking her best rank and weekly sales sum. A week earlier, her folk-pop reinvention of Drake's "Hotline Bling" charted at No. 28 (25,000).

Vachal is one of two contestants on The Voice this season to hit the Artist 100: Jordan Smith ranks at No. 71 after surging to No. 20.
