Bustle - What Does Gwen Stefani's New Song Sound Like? Here's What We Know

Alex Kritselis

On Thursday, it was revealed that Gwen Stefani's new single, "Make Me Like You," will be released to radio stations on Tues., Feb. 16. Commence freaking out... NOW! Yesterday, we learned that the No Doubt frontwoman collaborated on the upcoming track with songwriters Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels (Selena Gomez's "Good for You," Justin Bieber's "Sorry") and Swedish production duo Mattman & Robin (Carly Rae Jepsen's "Run Away With Me," DNCE's "Cake By the Ocean"). So, what can we expect "Make Me Like You" to sound like? Some alleged new details about the tune might give us a clue.

Though Stefani released a heartrending ballad, "Used to Love You," as her last single, according to Mike Doria, a Las Vegas radio show host who has purportedly heard "Make Me Like You," her new record is "upbeat and fun." Over the course of her career, Stefani has proven that she can pull off both slow songs and up-tempo jams, but I like the idea of her following up the heavy and emotional "Used to Love You" with something light and carefree. Doria went on to describe "Make Me Like You" as "a cool Spring/Summer song" to excited fans on Twitter. He also noted that it "[h]as a very Maroon 5 kind of sound but it is catchy as hell."

"[A] cool Spring/Summer song"? Awesome. "Catchy as hell"? Even better! But "[has] a very Maroon 5 kind of sound"? That one I'm not so sure about yet. Don't get me wrong, Maroon 5 has recorded some bops recently ("Maps," "Animals," "Sugar," etc.), but a big part of Stefani's appeal (for me, anyway) is her unique musical identity, which was muddled on songs like "Baby Don't Lie." Generally speaking, you know a Gwen Stefani song when you hear it. This is due in part to her distinctive voice, but I think there's more to it than that.

For example, with the premiere of her debut solo album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby., in 2004, Stefani introduced the world to a totally fresh style of pop music, one that skillfully mixed forward-thinking sounds with retro ones in new and interesting ways. She continued to march to the beat of her own drum on her 2006 sophomore LP, The Sweet Escape. I mean, honestly, when was the last time we heard a pop song as delightfully quirky and strange as "Wind It Up"? I don't want Stefani to mimic another band's sound or lose what often makes her material so instantly recognizable.

But, that being said, I admire Stefani's "Make Me Like You" collaborators, and I trust that they helped her come up with something that both stays true to her identity and appeals to top 40 radio listeners. Although "Make Me Like You" won't be officially released to the airwaves until Tues., Feb. 16, Doria tweeted that fans could hear it as soon as Thurs., Feb. 11.
