Gwen Stefani Battles With Herself On First Single From Solo LP

09.28.2004 4:17 PM EDT

As famous and glamorous as she might be, even Gwen Stefani has insecurities — and she's apparently airing her nervousness about her forthcoming solo album in the lyrics to the album's first single, "What You Waiting For?"

The lyrics to the song — formerly the title track for her forthcoming debut, Love, Angel, Music, Baby — captures the singer's conflicted feelings in the form of an inner dialogue with herself, with the more confident Gwen (who sings in a tough, strident tone) giving the nervous one (squeakier and higher) some tough love: "Take a chance, you might grow ... Take a chance, you stupid ho."

Stefani's nervousness about the album has been well documented (see "Gwen Stefani Turns To Bandmate For Aid After Freak-Out").

The song — co-written with Linda Perry and produced by Nellee Hooper — starts with a sweet, slow piano melody and lyrics that seem to pay tribute to her bandmates in No Doubt ("What an amazing time/ What a family/ How did the years go by?/ Now it's only me"). It then shifts abruptly to a driving beat with layered background voices, as Stefani suggests deadline pressures by singing, "Tick-tock, tick-tock." The nervous Stefani sings in the first person, while the confident one responds in the second person: "Naturally, I'm worried if I go it alone," while the other responds, "You never know, it could be great."

The chorus acts as the kick in the pants that the fretting Stefani needs: "Look at your watch now/ You're still a super-hot female/ You got your million-dollar contract/ And they're all waiting for your hot track." Finally, she starts to sound convinced, and even enthusiastic about what's in store: "I can't wait to go back into Japan." As the song winds down, the two voices merge.

"Making The Video: Gwen Stefani" airs on MTV Wednesday, 10/13 at 6 p.m.

The single is officially released on October 4 (although some radio stations are already playing it); Love, Angel, Music, Baby comes out November 23.

L.A.M.B News
"Dallas Austin had low ambitions for his most recent projects. All he wanted to do was turn Gwen Stefani into an '80s mixtape queen, bring Duran Duran back by taking them back, and help Nas become as outspoken as Bono. Easy, right?

So far, so good, according to the producer/songwriter.

"I just finished the Duran Duran record, which is going to be insane. And I just finished the Gwen Stefani solo record — it's off the chain, man," Austin said a few weeks ago in Miami.

The man who helmed some of TLC and Pink's biggest hits said Stefani's LP lives up to the hype, and then some. "Everybody is anticipating it, and it's everything they think it's going to be," he said. "It's myself, Andre 3000, Nellee Hooper and Linda Perry [producing]. It's almost like an '80s mixtape. We go back to some electro-pop, to some breakdance/b-boy stuff, then it goes into stuff like the Cure, then kind of alternative, like the Pretenders."

Dallas says working with Gwen was like spending time with someone during his wonder years.

"She's like a little eighth grader, in a way. She's a sweetheart," he smiled. "She's so used to writing with the band and being in No Doubt — in that mode. This is a new experience for her. We had a chance to collaborate on some really good stuff. She's incredible.

"I always wanted to work with Gwen," he said, when asked how the collaboration came about. "I knew when [I heard] she was going to work on a solo record, that would be the best opportunity for me. So I kinda put in early [to be a part of it]. Plus, I had Fishbone [albums] — once she found out I was an '80s nut, she was like, 'This is it.' We took it from there" (see "Gwen Stefani Warns, 'Watch Out' For Solo LP, Summer Single").

Austin says he's been stuck in a back-in-the-day time warp, between working with Gwen then getting in the studio with Duran Duran.

"I brought that '80s element back to Duran Duran," Austin continued. "I
brought that classic sound back to them. Between their harmonies and voices and
those sounds, it made everybody have that Duran Duran element. I been in the '80s
mix for a minute."

Austin didn't have a time period for the Nas sound he wanted to create, but he did have an idea of where he wants the voice of God's Son to be.

"Nas is the king," Austin said of the MC. "He's made every street record possible. I told him, 'I think it's time for you step up and deliver some information'. He should be the Bono for hip-hop. He's a really good brother and I think people need to hear the messages he has to deliver."

Nas' double LP, Street's Disciple, now has a release date of November 30. Duran Duran, who recorded in London with Austin, are putting their album, Astron

Solo Debut News
It looks like Gwen Stefani's upcoming solo album has a name after all. Though she first planned to title it What You Waiting For?, she's now calling it Love Angel Music Baby, four words whose initial letters spell "LAMB," the name of her clothing line, her rep confirmed. The first single, "What You Waiting For?," was written with Linda Perry and produced by Nellee Hooper, and the video was shot by Francis Lawrence. ... An unauthorized version of the Streets song "Dry Your Eyes," featuring Coldplay singer Chris Martin, has found its way to several Internet sites and radio stations across the country, prompting the British rapper's management to issue a statement denouncing the leak. "We have no idea how anyone heard it outside of the closest people to both bands and aren't particularly pleased," they said, clearly upset that a song featuring one of the world's most recognizable pop voices would create a buzz on their artist in the U.S. ...

SELF DOUBT
GWEN STEFANI will release her debut solo album 'LOVE ANGEL MUSIC BABY' on November 22.

The No Doubt singer has collaborated with a whole host of stars for the record, including Dr Dre, The Neptunes, Outkast ’s Andre 3000, New Order, Martin Gore and Dave Stewart.

Talking about working with so many people, Stefani said: "I spent all my time writing songs pouring my heart out in No Doubt so this time I wanted to do something different."

Stefani will precede 'Love Angel Music Baby' with the single 'What You Waiting For' earlier in November.

Season of Stefani
By MIKE BELL -- Calgary Sun
If you often find yourself thinking, "Man, I could never get sick of that Gwen Stefani," prepare to be proven wrong.

This fall and winter is shaping up to be Stefani season -- all Gwen, all the time.

First on tap for the rake-skinny blonde singer of No Doubt is a solo album.

Well, there's going solo, then there's going solo the Gwen Stefani way, which means that for her first foray into the musical world outside of the comfy womb of No Doubt, she's surrounded herself with some of the industry's hottest names.

According to the official No Doubt website, Stefani has enlisted the help of artists such as OutKast's Andre 3000, producer Nellee Hooper, and songwriter Linda Perry for her forthcoming as-yet untitled release, which is set for Nov. 23.

And just to show the disc will be only baby steps away from her band, fellow-No Doubter Tony Kanal co-wrote a couple of the album's tracks.

The first single, titled What You Waiting For? is scheduled to ship to radio sometime early next month.

Next up is the -- squeal! -- fall 2004 collection of Gwen's clothing line L.A.M.B. According to the website, the new fashions "will be in stores soon and you can view her current Le Sportsac guest designer series at www.lesportsac.com."

And if that ain't enough, Stefani will make her acting debut in the upcoming film The Aviator, which should hit the big-screen just in time for Christmas.

Stefani will play the role of Jean Harlow in the Martin Scorsese film about the life of Howard Hughes, which also stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett.

The Everything In Time CD gathers material from across the No Doubt vaults. 'Wait' Is Over For Stefani Solo Single
Gwen Stefani will unveil her first solo material early next month in the form of the single "What You Waiting For?" The No Doubt frontwoman's as-yet-untitled album will arrive Nov. 23 via Interscope. The set sports contributions from OutKast's Andre 3000, Linda Perry, Nellee Hooper and No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal, who co-wrote the tracks "Serious" and "Crash."

Stefani is also readying the fall collection in her L.A.M.B. clothing line and will make her big-screen debut in December playing actress Jean Harlow in the Howard Hughes biopic "The Aviator."

The other members of No Doubt are busy with a variety of projects. Kanal is working with new artist Elan Atias on his debut album, due next year via Interscope. Sessions have been undertaken in Jamaica and Miami with such producers as Sly & Robbie and Steven "Lenky" Marsden.

Drummer Adrian Young has lent his talents to Unwritten Law on tracks intended for the group's next Lava studio album, while guitarist Tom Dumont is working "on a environmentally friendly home landscaping project," according to No Doubt's official Web site.

Solo Debut Release Date
Dr. Dre and The Neptunes are among the producers collaborating with No Doubt's Gwen Stefani for her debut solo album, due November 3. Stefani is also working with Outkast's Andre 3000, and said he was the most intimidating guest because she was so in awe of his talent. The Neptunes produced No Doubt's 2002 hit, "Hella Good."

STEFANI INTIMIDATED BY ANDRE 3000
Sexy singer GWEN STEFANI is in such awe of OUTKAST star ANDRE 3000's talents, she was extremely nervous about recording a duet with him for her upcoming solo album.

Stefani, who will break away from her band NO DOUBT for the first time to release her own project in November (04), teamed up with an array of stars - including the NEPTUNES, NEW ORDER, DAVE STEWART, DALLAS AUSTIN and DR DRE -for her as-yet-untitled album.

But working with HEY YA! hitmaker Andre 3000 on the track BUBBLE POP ELECTRIC proved to be particularly daunting for the normally fearless Stefani.

She says, "I'm such a fan of Andre's. I was sent hundreds of tracks, and his were the first that I actually liked.

It was interesting to work with him while his star was really shining bright. At first, it was kind of intimidating, like, I didn't feel I could shine. But by the end, it felt like we were in a band together."
