Gwen Stefani Battles With Herself On First Single From Solo LP 09.28.2004 4:17 PM EDT The lyrics to the song — formerly the title track for her forthcoming debut, Love, Angel, Music, Baby — captures the singer's conflicted feelings in the form of an inner dialogue with herself, with the more confident Gwen (who sings in a tough, strident tone) giving the nervous one (squeakier and higher) some tough love: "Take a chance, you might grow ... Take a chance, you stupid ho." Stefani's nervousness about the album has been well documented (see "Gwen Stefani Turns To Bandmate For Aid After Freak-Out"). The song — co-written with Linda Perry and produced by Nellee Hooper — starts with a sweet, slow piano melody and lyrics that seem to pay tribute to her bandmates in No Doubt ("What an amazing time/ What a family/ How did the years go by?/ Now it's only me"). It then shifts abruptly to a driving beat with layered background voices, as Stefani suggests deadline pressures by singing, "Tick-tock, tick-tock." The nervous Stefani sings in the first person, while the confident one responds in the second person: "Naturally, I'm worried if I go it alone," while the other responds, "You never know, it could be great." The chorus acts as the kick in the pants that the fretting Stefani needs: "Look at your watch now/ You're still a super-hot female/ You got your million-dollar contract/ And they're all waiting for your hot track." Finally, she starts to sound convinced, and even enthusiastic about what's in store: "I can't wait to go back into Japan." As the song winds down, the two voices merge. "Making The Video: Gwen Stefani" airs on MTV Wednesday, 10/13 at 6 p.m. The single is officially released on October 4 (although some radio stations are already playing it); Love, Angel, Music, Baby comes out November 23. —Jennifer

News So far, so good, according to the producer/songwriter. "I just finished the Duran Duran record, which is going to be insane. And I just finished the Gwen Stefani solo record — it's off the chain, man," Austin said a few weeks ago in Miami. The man who helmed some of TLC and Pink's biggest hits said Stefani's LP lives up to the hype, and then some. "Everybody is anticipating it, and it's everything they think it's going to be," he said. "It's myself, Andre 3000, Nellee Hooper and Linda Perry [producing]. It's almost like an '80s mixtape. We go back to some electro-pop, to some breakdance/b-boy stuff, then it goes into stuff like the Cure, then kind of alternative, like the Pretenders." Dallas says working with Gwen was like spending time with someone during his wonder years. "She's like a little eighth grader, in a way. She's a sweetheart," he smiled. "She's so used to writing with the band and being in No Doubt — in that mode. This is a new experience for her. We had a chance to collaborate on some really good stuff. She's incredible. "I always wanted to work with Gwen," he said, when asked how the collaboration came about. "I knew when [I heard] she was going to work on a solo record, that would be the best opportunity for me. So I kinda put in early [to be a part of it]. Plus, I had Fishbone [albums] — once she found out I was an '80s nut, she was like, 'This is it.' We took it from there" (see "Gwen Stefani Warns, 'Watch Out' For Solo LP, Summer Single"). Austin says he's been stuck in a back-in-the-day time warp, between working with Gwen then getting in the studio with Duran Duran. "I brought
that '80s element back to Duran Duran," Austin continued. "I
Austin didn't have a time period for the Nas sound he wanted to create, but he did have an idea of where he wants the voice of God's Son to be. "Nas is the king," Austin said of the MC. "He's made every street record possible. I told him, 'I think it's time for you step up and deliver some information'. He should be the Bono for hip-hop. He's a really good brother and I think people need to hear the messages he has to deliver." Nas' double

DOUBT The No Doubt singer has collaborated with a whole host of stars for the record, including Dr Dre, The Neptunes, Outkast ’s Andre 3000, New Order, Martin Gore and Dave Stewart. Talking about working with so many people, Stefani said: "I spent all my time writing songs pouring my heart out in No Doubt so this time I wanted to do something different." Stefani will precede 'Love Angel Music Baby' with the single 'What You Waiting For' earlier in November. Season
of Stefani This fall and winter is shaping up to be Stefani season -- all Gwen, all the time. First on tap for the rake-skinny blonde singer of No Doubt is a solo album. Well, there's going solo, then there's going solo the Gwen Stefani way, which means that for her first foray into the musical world outside of the comfy womb of No Doubt, she's surrounded herself with some of the industry's hottest names. According to the official No Doubt website, Stefani has enlisted the help of artists such as OutKast's Andre 3000, producer Nellee Hooper, and songwriter Linda Perry for her forthcoming as-yet untitled release, which is set for Nov. 23. And just to show the disc will be only baby steps away from her band, fellow-No Doubter Tony Kanal co-wrote a couple of the album's tracks. The first single, titled What You Waiting For? is scheduled to ship to radio sometime early next month. Next up is the -- squeal! -- fall 2004 collection of Gwen's clothing line L.A.M.B. According to the website, the new fashions "will be in stores soon and you can view her current Le Sportsac guest designer series at www.lesportsac.com." And if that ain't enough, Stefani will make her acting debut in the upcoming film The Aviator, which should hit the big-screen just in time for Christmas. Stefani will
play the role of Jean Harlow in the Martin Scorsese film about the life
of Howard Hughes, which also stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett.

Is Over For Stefani Solo Single Stefani is also readying the fall collection in her L.A.M.B. clothing line and will make her big-screen debut in December playing actress Jean Harlow in the Howard Hughes biopic "The Aviator." The other members of No Doubt are busy with a variety of projects. Kanal is working with new artist Elan Atias on his debut album, due next year via Interscope. Sessions have been undertaken in Jamaica and Miami with such producers as Sly & Robbie and Steven "Lenky" Marsden. Drummer Adrian Young has lent his talents to Unwritten Law on tracks intended for the group's next Lava studio album, while guitarist Tom Dumont is working "on a environmentally friendly home landscaping project," according to No Doubt's official Web site. Amid all this activity, Interscope will on Oct. 12 release the DVD "Live in the Tragic Kingdom" and the B-sides/rarities collection "Everything in Time." Both items were previously only available as part last year's "Boom Box" boxed set. -- Jonathan

INTIMIDATED BY ANDRE 3000 Stefani, who will break away from her band NO DOUBT for the first time to release her own project in November (04), teamed up with an array of stars - including the NEPTUNES, NEW ORDER, DAVE STEWART, DALLAS AUSTIN and DR DRE -for her as-yet-untitled album. But working with HEY YA! hitmaker Andre 3000 on the track BUBBLE POP ELECTRIC proved to be particularly daunting for the normally fearless Stefani. She says, "I'm such a fan of Andre's. I was sent hundreds of tracks, and his were the first that I actually liked. It was interesting
to work with him while his star was really shining bright. At first, it
was kind of intimidating, like, I didn't feel I could shine. But by the
end, it felt like we were in a band together." |
