Doubt's Tony Kanal Launches Label Kanal first saw Elan performing with the Wailers in 1998 and tells Billboard.com, "I, along with everyone in the audience, was amazed to see this kid do justice to Bob [Marley]'s vocals." The pair was introduced but didn't find time to begin collaborating until several years later. "It wasn't until 2003 that Elan and I had the chance to get in the studio and start writing together," he says. "He proved himself to be a great songwriter and an amazing vocalist." Elan and Stefani previously collaborated on a cover of Bryan Ferry's "Slave to Love," which Kanal produced for the "50 First Dates" soundtrack. Kingsbury Studios is not exclusively distributed by any major, but in the case of Elan's record, Kanal says, "Interscope was a great match because they have a history of breaking one-of-a-kind, unique artists like him." With...Zaldy, designer ADVERTISEMENT On the morning we met, Zaldy - who has also worked as a costume designer and stylist for musicians like Britney Spears, Melissa Auf der Maur, Rufus Wainwright, J. Lo, Lil' Kim, Mary J. Blige, Beyoncé (who wore a Zaldy dress on the cover of Vanity Fair) and, yes, Gwen Stefani - was sporting what he jokingly called his "Fashion Leather Daddy" look: Dior jeans, a tight black leather Y-3 jacket, a black-and-red striped L.A.M.B. cashmere scarf, hiking boots from Paragon, a Civil War-style leather cap, a vintage belt with a big gold cat's head buckle, and a silver wolf's head ring (the wolf being the logo of his Zaldy line because it symbolizes "the individual but it's an animal that runs with the pack, too"). As we headed over to Century 21 (22 Cortland Street; 212-227-9092), the soft-spoken, gracious Parsons grad talked about the Chelsea Hotel, where he's lived for more than a decade ("I just love the Chelsea - the size of it and the history and the feeling that's there"), his favorite celebrity ("Gwen, of course! She's so cool. Just real easy, down-to-earth, no bs") and his current favorite nightclubs ("I go to MisShapes and I like Happy Valley a lot; it's super, super fun"). As we entered the store, Zaldy told us that his signature collection always had a "little rock ‘n roll" vibe (not coincidentally, he recently signed on to design stage gear for the upcoming Scissor Sisters world tour and made all 32 costumes for the Citizens Band show at New York's Deitch Projects) but his attention quickly turned from introspection to acquisition as we headed up to the second floor men's department, where he hoped to find a plaid, shearling-trimmed Viktor and Rolf coat that he had been eyeing for the past few months. "I have been stalking this coat," he confided with a laugh. "It was $1000 and then it was $700 and if it hits $500, I just might have to get it. I need a new coat. Let's go check to see if it's marked down." He scoured the designer coat rack, but no luck. "I don't see my coat and I'm really upset," he said. "I just thought for sure... Oh, wait" - he had spied a plaid coat buried in the sea of black and his face lit up, then fell again when he realized it wasn't "his" coat. "No," he said glumly, turning to survey the nearby racks. "Is there a Viktor and Rolf section anywhere?" he said to no one in particular. "That's the thing. It could be anywhere. I'll just keep looking." And keep looking he did, though he confined himself to the far end of the store, where all the big-name designer labels were displayed. "I don't go past that stairwell," he said with a chuckle, indicating the staircase that rose in the middle of the menswear department. "It's all suits and a little bit more conservative over there. Let's go into the other room." He didn't find his coat in the designer sportswear section, but he did find an ivory Hussein Chalayan v-neck button-down ($109), which got tossed into his shopping basket, though a $199 Gaultier sweater (formerly $940) was rejected for being "too fuzzy." "I'm really sad," he announced, returning once again to topic of the Viktor and Rolf coat. "But it's not necessarily gone. Things reappear, because people return things and then they end up on the floor again." He brightened upon spying a Helmut Lang hot pink chiffon shirt ("No, but it is tempting though, isn't it? Just because?") and grew positively giddy over a pair of Paul Smith floral wallpaper-patterned pants (originally $250, now $99.97). "Oh, Rufus would die!" Zaldy said of his good friend Rufus Wainwright. "But they're not his size." The hymn "Go Tell It On the Mountain" began wafting from the sound system. "I'm feeling spiritual all of a sudden," cracked Zaldy. He was also feeling the need for new t-shirts to wear to the gym, so we headed downstairs to the men's underwear department. Along the way, he nabbed a gray button-front sleeveless cashmere henley ($119.97, was $460) and a white Cloak t-shirt, reduced from $145 to $45.97, which had a pen-and-ink looking illustration of an eagle soaring across the chest. He turned up his nose at the Dockers display ("No, thank you!") and stopped to look at a rack of Le Tigre polos ("Le Tigre is back? How funny") before trying on a $29 black cashmere beanie. "It's a licensed Geoffrey Beene," he announced solemnly, reading aloud from the label. "It's nice, though. The wool ones always make my forehead itch. And it looks good." It did indeed. We asked if he had ever found L.A.M.B. clothes at Century 21. "No, L..A.M.B. doesn't go on sale," he replied with faux hauteur. "It doesn't have to. But that would be a weird day." A quick stroll through the underwear department revealed they didn't have any cotton hipster briefs in size 28 ("Oh, no, no, no," he said of the many nylon, spandex and mesh bikinis on display. "Those look really uncomfortable and sweaty. Not for me.") Zaldy had better luck finding v-neck and crew neck t-shirts in his size ("Just what I needed for the gym!") and, after ducking into a dressing room to try on the henley, Cloak tee and button-down - keeping the first two and jettisoning the dress shirt as it was too baggy in the back - he headed to the bedding department in the basement, where he scored several 450-plus thread count Egyptian cotton sheet sets (priced from $59 to $80) in solid shades of white, eggplant and what he called "elephant gray," the latter of which just happened to match his new sweater vest almost exactly. He sailed past a display of colorful Kate Spade bedding ("I don't think so; too bright") and headed to the counter to pay. His total was $431.11, but according to the receipt, which lists the original and everyday low-low-low Century 21 price of every item, he had saved a whopping $684.27. "Wow!" he crowed. "I have a new outfit and two new sheet sets, and I saved more than I spent. It's a good day." Have

Stefani Give Birth To New Magazine Stefani is in advanced talks with former Jane founder and editor, Jane Pratt, to start a women's lifestyle magazine, reports Women's Wear Daily. Stefani's lawyer confirmed Thursday that the singer and the former editor are in talks, but insisted there has been "no definitive agreement." Whatever
the concept for the mag, knowing Stefani, we can expect it to be high
fashion, hip, street, and yet accesible, just like her. |
