Tony Kanal joins Gwen on tour
A brief posting on the NoDoubt.com fan board is getting big play all across the Blogosphere. The posting cites a source as saying that Tony has joined Gwen on her tour to record demos for a new No Doubt album. The source says more than a dozen demos have been recorded so far. No further confirmation has been made, however, so take it for what it's worth. The tidbit has been picked up by several other sites.

Revoking license won't stem underage drinking
Assemblywoman Amy Handlin's call for the state to revoke the liquor license at the PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, is a misguided attempt to quash the problem of underage drinking at the amphitheater. The reason she's off the mark is because it is unlikely that the concert venue's staff or its alcohol sales are responsible for the underage drinking that has taken place there. Handlin last week asked the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control to take action in response to reports that 15 concertgoers, 13 of them minors, were treated for alcohol poisoning or other drinking-related injuries during and after a performance by pop star Gwen Stefani on May 18. The assemblywoman, who represents parts of Monmouth and Middlesex counties, said many constituents had contacted her about the problem, and she does not want the summer concert season to proceed without a severe crackdown.

Sovereign shocks US fans with outburst
British rapper Lady Sovereign shocked fans in New York by telling them to "F**k America" before cutting short a gig due complaining of depression.

The "Love Me Or Hate Me" star told the crowd at Studio B in Brooklyn she was only performing for financial gain - as she can't afford to pay her rent, despite her success in the U.S. including a slot supporting Gwen Stefani on tour later this year (07).

She said, "I'm sorry but I have to do this for the money - I'm so broke right now. I'm just about paying my rent. I'm gonna be homeless in two weeks. I'm not even joking. You don't understand I've just come out of depression? This is so painful to do."

Last month (Apr07), Lady Sovereign cancelled the remaining dates of her U.K. tour after failing to recover from a bout of exhaustion.

Five fun facts about Gwen
1. Once upon a time, she rocked the Boathouse. No Doubt, the ska-rock band that launched Stefani into fame, played The Boathouse in Norfolk in December of 1996, a make-up date for an August show that was canceled due to Stefani's throat problems. The December show was a sold-out triumph and a vocal tour de force by the blonde singer.

2. She's married to a Bush man. Gwen and Gavin Rossdale, former front man of the British rock band Bush, were married in 2002. On May 26, 2006, Stefani gave birth to a son, Kingston James McGregor Rossdale. Although they didn't start dating until 1998, it's possible that the seeds of their relationship were sown when Bush and No Doubt toured together in 1996. In February of that year, Bush and No Doubt played Hampton Coliseum along with the Goo Goo Dolls.

3. Gwen + Pharrell = Hit. Stefani has enjoyed a successful working relationship with Pharrell Williams, the Virginia Beach producer who was largely responsible for her massive hit "Hollaback Girl." On Stefani's new album, The Sweet Escape, he co-wrote five tracks including the disc's first single, "Wind It Up." The disc's title track, currently at No. 10 on Billboard's hit list, is not a Williams collaboration, however.

4, One Gwen hit is historic. In 2005, Stefani's No. 1 hit "Hollaback Girl" became the first U.S. digital download to exceed sales of 1 million. "It's a pretty big deal," Silvio Pietroluongo, director of Billboard magazine's Hot 100 and Digital Songs charts, told the Los Angeles Times. "The digital market ... has really rejuvenated the singles genre, and it's pleasant to see that, to be honest."

5. "Eau De Stefani" is on the way. L.A.M.B., Stefani's clothing line, debuted in 2003. Late last year, Coty Inc. announced that it will work with Stefani's company to produce a fragrance that's to hit the market this fall. Coty Inc., the world's largest fragrance company, has developed products for Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs and adidas.

Gwen is reported to be the best deal
Radio One DJ Colin Murray has offered to carry the Leeds band on stage in Preston on Sunday May 20 but Wilson insists he would rather be carried by Sweet Escape singer Stefani.

He told Radio One's Jo Whiley: "I want Gwen Stefani to carry me on stage. She'd be perfect and we don't have any big burly guys to do it for us."

When Stefani performed at last year's Radio One Music Festival in Sunderland she was carried from her dressing room by her large bodyguard to avoid getting her feet muddy.

Wilson added: "With Gwen I think we get the best end of the deal."

Also performing at the event will be an all star line up including The Scissor Sisters, Mika. The Fratellis, The Klaxons, Natasha Bedingfield, Dizzee Rascal, Rihanna and Bloc Party.

Party in Atlanta
Gwen Stefani, Yung Joc, Jagged Edge and Big Boi came out Thursday night in Atlanta for two shindigs christening Cee-Lo's new record label, Radiculture Records. At the first event, held at the Lambert Place reception hall, video screens showed different excerpts of Cee-Lo's career, from the Goodie Mob to Gnarls Barkley. Partygoers walked down a yellow brick road and were greeted by actors dressed as Beetlejuice and Lurch from "The Addams Family." An afterparty was held at the Lotus Lounge and had a Cirque de Soleil motif. Dancing went on there until 3 a.m.

More news about Verizon
Verizon Wireless' decision to drop its sponsorship of the Gwen Stefani Sweet Escape tour because of the actions of supporting act Akon probably would not have happened as recently as six weeks ago, many in the touring and branding sectors believe.

"It is a sign of the times," said Jim Guerinot, Stefani's manager. "The '50s."

The controversy stems from an Akon concert last month in Trinidad, where the artist danced provocatively with an underage fan. When footage of the incident found its way online and controversy followed, Verizon backed out of the Stefani tour, even though Akon's show was unrelated to and not part of the Sweet Escape tour, which commenced April 21 in Phoenix.

Regardless, a Verizon Wireless representative said the decision to back out of the tour was "based on a number of things" but would not publicly specify a connection to the incident in Trinidad. Akon ringtones and music were still available on Verizon phones as of May 11.

A source close to the situation, however, attributed Verizon's decision to increased sensitivity in the wake of Don Imus' firing from CBS Radio over comments that were deemed racist, and the subsequent scrutiny of urban music. "Verizon received a lot of calls from Laura Ingraham fans and Verizon caved," the source said, referring to talk radio host Ingraham, whose syndicated show seemed to add fuel to the fire.

But an executive at an entertainment marketing company, who chose not to be identified, sees things differently. "Verizon is being very cautious," he said. "For corporations, hip-hop is riskier than other types of music when it comes to brand/artist alliances. But I don't feel that what Verizon has done is indicative of the current 'Don Imus climate.' The problem here is that what (Akon) did happened to be with a minor."

Meanwhile, Stefani is out a presenting sponsor for her tour and the inherent marketing clout that brings. Industry sources put the cash value of a tour sponsorship package like the one between Stefani and Verizon in the $1.5 million-$2 million range; on top of that, marketing value can be worth as much as $1 million or more. Sources said Verizon intends to pay Stefani in full. Her manager, Guerinot, declined to discuss the financial terms but did say that "we're just in the beginning stages of evaluating" the impact of Verizon's move. "We're surprised and shocked they've backed out of" the sponsorship, Guerinot said.

Most sponsorship agreements include some sort of morals clause, though the language usually is ambiguous, those in the industry told Billboard. However, there seems to be a trend toward more specific language regarding which behavior is unacceptable.

Guerinot said that Akon's performance on the Stefani tour "has at best been a PG show. Children of all ages have been attending. We have had no complaints." To this point, no dates have been canceled and Akon remains on the tour, which also features Lady Sovereign.

"It was never my intention to embarrass or take advantage of my fans in any way, especially those under the age of 18," Akon said in a public statement of apology for the Trinidad debacle. "I pledge to all that we will strive to make sure this type of incident does not happen again."

Gwen's house threatened by fire
There are some big fires going on in the Los Angeles era at the moment, and the firemen are having a difficult time to lit out the fire, Aftonbladet reports. The fire is reported from the hills, and they mentioned that the fire was getting "dangerously close" to Gwen's house. She was the only celeb they mentioned.

However, the reporters where wrong because Gwen is no longer living in that area. She has sold her Loz Feliz house, and moved into a bigger house in another area that is not threatened by fire.

The fire started around 01:30pm, and according to KCAL 9, there are currently seven airplanes who are waterbombing the area along with hundreds of firemen on the ground. The authorities are telling people to evacuate, pack their cars, and leave the area as soon as possible.

Now let´s just pray that everyone in the area will be unharmed.

Verizon Pulls Out Of Stefani Tour Over Akon Flap
Gwen Stefani

May 08, 2007, 12:00 AM ET

Michael Paoletta, N.Y. and Ray Waddell, Nashville

Verizon Wireless has abruptly pulled out as the presenting sponsor on Gwen Stefani's current Sweet Escape tour due to an incident involving the trek's opening act, Akon.

Last month, during a concert in Trinidad, Akon danced provocatively with a 15-year-old fan. When footage of the onstage dance found its way online, Verizon got cold feet. (Akon's show in Trinidad was unrelated to and not part of the Sweet Escape tour, which commenced April 21 in Phoenix.)

In addition to ending its affiliation with the Sweet Escape trek, Verizon has also removed Akon ringtones and music from its stores and handsets. The Verizon Wireless V Cast TV spots featuring Akon are also history.

Industry sources put the cash value of a tour sponsorship package like the one between Stefani and Verizon in the $1.5-$2 million range in cash, which artists typically use to finance production, startup costs and other tour expenses.

But marketing value can be worth as much as $1 million or more. Stefani manager Jim Guerinot, of Rebel Waltz, declined to discuss the financial terms, but does tell Billboard.com that "we're just in the beginning stages of evaluating" the impact of Verizon's move. Regarding the presenting sponsorship, Guerinot says, "We're surprised and shocked they've backed out of it."

As for Akon, Guerinot says, "Akon has been a perfect gentleman on this tour. His show has at best been a PG show. Children of all ages have been attending. We have had no complaints -- nothing but satisfied people. And I would say that we're shocked that Verizon would drop Gwen Stefani as part of this whole debate."

Industry observers say it will be difficult for Stefani and her team to pull another sponsor into the Sweet Escape tour, which has North American dates on the books through June 30 in Las Vegas. To this point, no dates have been cancelled and Akon remains on the tour.

Akon and Verizon spokespeople were unavailable for comment.

Gwen brings along a different set of drapes
When the producers of Gwen Stefani's new "Sweet Escape" tour approached Sew What? Inc. for new masking drapes, they wanted something more than the usual "Commando Cloth" fabric. They wanted drapes that could be used tour after tour, while still looking great and retaining the required flame retardancy properties. Sew What? Inc. was up for the challenge.

Rancho Dominguez, CA (PRWEB) May 6, 2007 -- When the producers of Gwen Stefani's new "Sweet Escape" tour approached Sew What? Inc. for new masking drapes, they wanted something more than the usual "Commando Cloth" fabric (http://www.sewwhatinc.com/events_commando.php). They wanted drapes that could be used tour after tour, while still looking great and retaining the required flame retardancy properties.

"Most tour producers think in terms of just the one tour," said Sew What? president Megan Duckett. "What I loved about this assignment was the forward-thinking of the producers. They were concerned about longevity and continued flame retardancy, which actually makes tremendous sense."

Most tour producers think in terms of just the one tour The Sew What? team selected their 22 oz. Encore Velour (http://www.sewwhatinc.com/vel_22encore.php) as the fabric of choice to drape the high-energy show, which kicked off at the Coors Amphitheater in Chula Vista, CA on April 22. According to the Sew What? website, IFR Encore Velour is a newly introduced stage curtain fabric which combines the rich look of velour with inherent flame resistance. The higher cost of this fabric is offset by fact that it does not need to be re-treated for flame retardancy, therefore making it ideal for heavy-duty and repeated use.

Included onstage are a 40' x 60' backdrop (http://www.sewwhatinc.com/stage_backdrops.php), mid-stage and riser masking drapes, and a huge "Kabuki" drop curtain with black and white stripes echoing the show's prison escape theme.

When the "Sweet Escape" tour travels abroad, they will bring along a different set of drapes now being created by Sew What?. Whereas the current show utilizes walls incorporating dazzling LED displays, the international set will need to be more compact and travel lighter. This requires bringing the "bling" to the curtains instead.

"The international drapes are one of the most exciting projects we've had. They have to carry the visual weight of the show," added Ms. Duckett. "These new drapes are based on Gwen's gold "G" logo, and will combine traditional velour with digital printing along with amazing appliqués including giant acrylic jewels. They're going to be a work of art! But then, this is just the kind of thing we specialize in."

Sew What? Inc., located in Rancho Dominguez, CA, is well-known for its dramatic theatrical drapes and fabrics used in major rock concerts, top fashion shows and other artistic staged venues. In 2006, the company received numerous awards for innovation, including the Dell/NFIB Small Business Excellence Award as well as PC Magazine's SMB 20 Award for technological innovation for small and medium-sized businesses. For information, contact Sew What, Inc. at (310) 639-6000, or visit http://www.sewwhatinc.com/

Verizon ends sponsorships
Verizon promoted Akon as one of the musicians on its mobile-phone music service, and said it would no longer sponsor the Gwen Stefani tour in which Akon, who recently performed on "American Idol," is the opening act.

Verizon spokesperson Jim Gerace has claimed that the company made a huge err in judgment by establishing a partnership with Akon. Furthermore, Gerace has asserted that all materials promoting sponsorship of the Gwen Stefani/ Akon tour will soon be destroyed. Akon ring tones have also been removed from the company's website.

Verizon Wireless has pulled its sponsorship of R&B/hip-hop artiste Akon, Jim Gerace, the company's corporate strategy, policy manager, confirmed yesterday.

"We didn't provide a statement or have one. I simply told Fox that we decided this week to stop sponsoring Akon. That's all we have to say about it," Gerace said.

When asked about the reason for the end of the Verizon/Akon partnership, Gerace told the Express: "We did not give them (Fox) a reason. We made the decision this week is all we are saying."

According to a Fox News report, the partnership was ended because of the star's recent simulated sex dance with 15-year-old Danah Alleyne at the Zen nightclub in Port of Spain.

"This week the partnership ended," Fox News reported Verizon as saying of the decision.

"We have music services on our cellphone service and we were promoting him as one of the artists. The other part of the sponsorship was the Gwen Stefani tour, of which he was an opening act. We are no longer sponsoring the tour."

Akon was scheduled to perform at Gwen Stefani's tour, The Sweet Escape.

The 40-stop tour, which is in support of Stefani's second solo album, kicked off on April 22 and is scheduled to end on June 23 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, California.

Akon was scheduled to perform at some of the biggest arenas in the United States, including Giants Stadium. His ringtones have already been removed by the Verizon Wireless website.

To date Akon has released two albums, Trouble and Konvicted, each of which has produced huge hit singles, including "Don't Matter", "I Wanna Love You", "Smack That", and "Locked Up".
