NO DOUBT Interviews 1999

No Doubt interview from Much Music, Canada Feb'00:

Check out this radio transcript
of that interview made by Melissa Chungfat:

RICK: No Doubt. No Doubt in the house. Tom at the end. Tony. Adrian and of course the always fashionable Gwen Stefani right there. (crowd cheering). It's been a few years since you've been here and uh we sort of thought you guys didn't like us anymore.

GWEN: That's not true, we were just waiting for Valentine's day and we wanted to ya. No we've been trying to make a really good record for you. We were working really hard on it for a really long time.

RICK: And before we get to that, cause it is a good one, um for the next twenty minutes, would you mind, being as a band being my valetine?

GWEN AND ADRIAN: awwwwwww

RICK: Cause uh, I've been having some problems lately and I just wanted to… (hands the band chocolate) and there's four of them in there so help yourselves..whatever you wanna chew on them. You can go right for it Adrian .

ADRIAN: I'll save them for a little later

RICK: This is the new one (holds up a drawing of the album cover). That's not the actual cover art there but I thought it would be appropriate.

GWEN: It's really close actually

RICK: Really? Being Valentine's day and Saturn and the loop going around Saturn. I sense that someone's in a lot of trouble listening to this one here.

GWEN: um..there was a couple of problems a couple of years back but I'm better now thanks. I'm a little better now

RICK:So you obviously wrote this a couple of years back

GWEN: Over the past two years it was written and um..definitely, probably, one of the lower points for me, a little bit of a dip I've had. Kind of perfect life so far. I'm just kidding (laughs). No, it was …we were really happy with it. It was kind of like a transitional phase and now we kind of got through it and now we're here today you know, healthy, happy, excited recharged.

RICK: What kind of little dip were you talking about there? Alluding to,

GWEN: You have to read the lyrics and you have to buy the record

RICK: Oh I've heard them all and I could give you some examples here I just um..could I give some examples?

GWEN: sure

RICK: Would you mind if I give some examples. You guys haven't heard this yet have you? (screaming in the background) Um..one being from Bathwater. I'd love to think you'd never love another. One from Artificial Sweetener. I'm on a fence I want you to be on your side and keep a promise and this is one here from Marry Me I like this one a lot. Um..i want someone who believes in commitment perhaps a wedding proposal there.

GWEN: Oh well, you know there's a bunch of stuff there. You know what? This is how I feel about talking about lyrics. I feel like I've given so much about myself already with the songs that um..i don't wanna go and ruin it for everybody who's getting' way more out of it than I ever intended so I just kinda shut up at this point I'm like ok.

RICK: And let them get it

GWEN: Exactly . Cause I can come along and say what I'm thinkin' and I'm like no you're all wrong this is what I meant and they're getting' all this out of it then I spoil it for them.

RICK: Do you regret putting yourself out to the world at times?

GWEN: Um.

RICK: Being so personal with your lyrics or..

GWEN: I don't think any of us really think about it while we're writing the songs you know. It's all about us getting inside trying to write the best songs we can. You know? Maybe there's a bit of a sacrifice with that but at the same time, I mean when people relate to the songs at that's, like, very comforting in itself so..

RICK: Ya and do you ever find that people listening to the album approaching you guys and asking you advice on love and relationships and things like that? Do you ever get that? Ever. Adrian?

ADRIAN: No I wouldn't' know how to give advice but I did just get married a month ago.

RICK: There you go then

ADRIAN: I'm feeling extra love. Even though she's not here with me

RICK: You'll have to save one of those (chocolates) for your loved one then

ADRIAN: Mm hmm

RICK: The environment audience is with us today as you can see. They're always (crowd screaming).. uhh. They also have some questions and stuff on their mind.

GWEN: Oh.Ok

RICK: We're gonna start with Katie over here. Katie you have a question. Say hi to the guys

KATIE: Hi

BAND: Hi

KATIE: Ok. Um me and my friend Mary Anne here were just wondering Gwen, if you could maybe clear up the rumors that have been goin' around about you and Gavin and has it had any effect on the band if so at all

GWEN: Um..well I didn't know there was any rumors. I mean we've been together for four years

KATIE: Just different things like you're together you're not together and it's confusing

GWEN: Well it's kinda like high school like you know how you're goin' out with someone then you break up then get back together and this all drama. And then I think that getting' back together with someone is sometimes funner part about it. You know, all romantic and exciting again and..

KATIE: How about right now

GWEN: Um.. I got a big thing of roses from my valentine so (crowd says "awwwww" and Gwen laughs) Who said boo?

RICK: Now you guys, what did you get for Valentine's. Tom?

TOM: Um..you know I haven't gotten anything yet.

GWEN: I'm getting hot, I'm gonna take my jacket off

RICK: It is warm isn't it?

TOM: You're gonna be my only Valentine (Rick laughs)

RICK: You better eat your chocolate before Adrian eats them all. (Adrian offers and crowd laughs) We still have a few hours left of the day so are you expecting?

TOM: One of the weird things being away from home we get to travel a lot. We have been for the last 2 years we've been home makin' the record but now we're doin' this and we've gonna come back through and play shows and it is weird. That's the one thing leaving people behind at home um… but then we get to meet so many other new people that works out in a good way

RICK: Tony?

TONY: No. No Valentine for me. I sent flowers to my mom. Just a single guy. I'll look for the right girl today. We'll see.

RICK: I don't wanna get them confused this isn't the cover art. It plans for the cover art. Are you working on something?

GWEN: It's finished. Ya umm…

RICK: What's it gonna look like?

GWEN: Well it's a secret. I'm not gonna tell everything but basically it's all reflective. It's all kind of symbolism for the lyrics

RICK: Ok

GWEN: I think the lyrics on this record are um..i dunno everything kinda centered around them like the music kinda centered around them and um.. the art work centered around them so. It's one of those records that's a good car record first of all. It's a good driving record. Also a good headphone, sit-in-your-bed and read record so.

RICK: It is very good

GWEN: I can't express how excited we are to kind of be back and how kinda burned out we were but we're so not anymore we have this album it's like our little baby and we're ready to like show it off to everyone so.

RICK: You gotta take some time off every once in awhile. You get burnt out and you get back to it and when you get back to it, you're even stronger at it I guess you could say

GWEN: I think so. It's been thirteen years now we've been going at it so

RICK: Wow you're gonna get to that little..as well. We're gonna get to a video first, It's gonna be the latest. Ex-Girlfriend from Return of Saturn. Um.. I gotta couple of things from the video. It surprised me that you're bringing up the subject of the whole Tony,Gwen thing or..(Gwen laughs) I was thinking it would have something to do with another relationship but..

GWEN: It's not about Tony. But Tony plays the part of my Ex-broyfriend. But it's kind of a coincidence that he happens to actually be my Ex-boyfriend. But um..

TONY: It's complicated

RICK: Explain this then. You pushing Tony out the window. What was up with that scene at then end. We're gonna see it very very soon.

GWEN: Well Tony pushed me out the window

RICK: Ok

GWEN: Ya. Because I kicked his a…butt. I kicked his bottom. And um.. I kicked a bunch of guys butts actually in the video, so yeah. So I think he's down for the count and he ends up surprising me and revenge you know.

RICK: Beautiful zuit suit by the way. Grease, slimeball charater type you played

TONY: I had to get into character yeah

RICK: And we have to also add the traditional Tommy Lee uh speedos that you were wearing

ADRIAN: G-string (everybody laughs)

RICK: G-string? Cause you never actually see it when you stand up and turn around

GWEN: It's horrible (everyone laughs)

ADRIAN: Butt floss

RICK: Now let's get off to the Return of Saturn. This isn't the actual CD cover look like. You'll see it very very soon though. Uh.. No Doubt. It's right here on Muchmusic

(they play video)

RICK: Yes. You're back with Muchmusic. No Doubt in the house. You're coolin' off a little bit cause you got some water

GWEN: yeah

RICK: Getting' warm in here every once in awhile doesn't it? Especially if you have three layers on. I should probably take one off but I'm gonna keep it on. Fashion thing (Gwen laughs) So when Tragic Kingdom came out, you had this goal. The goal was to sell a hundred thousand copies, performing in front of 500 people every night. I think that was the goal. That's what I read

GWEN: Something like that

RICK: Has the goal changed now? Because you went out to sell 15 million and performed in front of thousands of people. Has the goal changed? Do you want the listener to relate to something specific off this album?

GWEN: Um..it's a little different this time. I think cause uh we felt really complete after this record you know? We got to be this garage band and we got to be this big pop band around the world. We got to visit all the different cultures and um the only reason to make that record at that point was if we were gonna make something for ourselves that proves that we can write and improve our song writing so that was the goal was and I think we feel like we did it and we're really happy with the record, how it turned out and it really reflects us now and it reflects all the thirteen years we've put into the band and I dunno, I think we have another goal now because we're greedy humans. But I think we just wanna play now and have people hear the album and play for 'em cause um, it's been interesting. There's a lotta press like all in a row and we haven't been playing and you forget it's like oh I can sing songs that'll be fun you know? These guys play instruments and we're really looking forward that part. That's the fun part. That's the part we do good.

RICK: Yeah, just pose for pictures in magazines

GWEN: Yeah

RICK: It's time to get out there and play

GWEN: It's like super models now or something (laughs)

RICK: We brought the environment in again as we said George is here. George has (Adrian and Gwen applaud) been here for awhile. He loves NO DOUBT #1 4EVER

GEORGE: Loves No Doubt (says it with a funky accent. Everyone laughs and Gwen imitates)

Yeah um, first of all I'm on a trip right now. Like this is just amazing. Like an amazing experience just to meet you guys all cause you guys are so inspirational. Uh my question is geared to you. (Points to Adrian.) You said in AP Magazine, "that we should hang it up after this album and then there will be a good myth about us." So state the realities on that and if there's any truth to that then I'm sure you'll be letting down a LOT of fans including myself because the album's amazing.

ADRIAN: Ok um..we don't know what the future holds for us. Like I said I just got married. I think we're all like going into our thirties and families, are short follow and it's hard to make records and spend their whole time doing that and do it well if you have a lot of activities in your lives. At least in our band it is. The future's uncertain. We may continue to make records but uh...i didn't mean that if we did decide to stop, it would be nice to go, end on top. Cause it's not that common and uh you'd see a lot of bands kinda go down and kinda knocking in it for everything they've got for years and years and you know the Police went on top and look how, they're still such legends and it would be nice to do that too. So we'll see. Who knows.

RICK: Out with a bang. Out with a bang. That's what I say. Thanks George

GEORGE: Thank you

RICK: So you've been together thirteen years. Always with each other. Um, hooked up in high school. You're like this tight-knit, you know, family group on and off the stage. What have you learned from each other in that time. That's a long time to spend with each other. Like four people you must have leaned a lot of different things in that time

TOM: We have a pretty amazing friendship. Especially in the last, you know, number of years and the success ha been really intense. We went from being really best friends to living on top of each other and in the same bug for months and months and there's… we sometimes fight like brothers and sisters you know, we have our arguments but at the same time, there's a great chemistry and you know, we have so much fun hanging out together in the last few weeks traveling together to start promoting the record we just to nothing but have fun it seems like for the most part. Uh, so we're kind of lucky in that way and that's, I think, what's kept us together for so many years is there's this chemistry between us and we do get along so well. ("CHEMICALS BETWEEN US. THE WALLS THAT….sorry, that just came up)

RICK: You agree Tony?

TONY: Absolutely. O yeah. We do get along. Cause we're that kind of band where even though we're not working, we'll still be hanging out. Go have dinner, having a party, stuff like that.

RICK: That's the main thing. If you can't have that, then there's no sense in being together

TONY: Totally. Totally. And we've gotten used to each other. There's a lot of respect between all of us and you learn to deal with each person's idiosyncrasies (good vocab man) and you know what I mean?

RICK: Hanna has traveled all the way from Montreal. She's right over here uh...Hanna

GWEN: Hi (She and Adrian applaud. Again)

HANNA: Um…well happy Valentine's Day first of all and my question, well first of all, I wanna say you guys all have, individually amazing styles but my question is directed towards Gwen. Uh, you've basically become a trend setter throughout the years and I've been watching you through the public eye and I just wanna know, like I've seen your style go through many changes..

GWEN: I know, I was lookin' in this ( a fan's scrapbook), and I saw the different blends and I was like whoa

HANNA: But it's always stayed very unique and I want to know what inspired your sense of style

GWEN: Well, I think originally it probably um, I have to admit the whole kind of style part seemed a little superficial and unimportant compared to the coming off of making the new album and kinda getting' all deep and that whole part but we do embrace it and we do like to have a good time and I think it's definitely an extension of your personality and it's..as soon as I hit adolescence it started I think, it was like I didn't wanna go to school lookin' like anyone else and um, it was just like. I dunno, it just kept goin' from there on and I guess being in a band it enables you to like just kind of be a lot more different than anyone else. Do you know what I mean? Ya. It was an excuse to play around even more and um, it's fun being with these guys and we kinda all try to outdo each other. We all do it for each other in a lot of ways. You know like…

HANNA: It's so fun but like it still has taste what you guys do with yourselves

GWEN: It's fun like when we get on the plane together and we're sittin' there and now we get to travel in first class and stuff like that so there will be all these guys with suits around us and we'll all be like (screams and makes a funky face) and it's just like powerful, like, club of being together and in looking like how we do or whatever. You know? And I think the people in the suits enjoy it too you know? They're like alright, somethin' a little different

RICK: I just wanna add something here. It's not only Gwen with the style. Look at the argile socks on Tom and Tony here. They're stylin' there. Thank you Hanna. You have somethin' else there

HANNA: This is for you

GWEN: Oh what's that? (tosses her a necklace) Oh perfect. I couldn't find my necklace this morning

RICK: There you go. You got the bare neck

GWEN: Yeah. So I'm gonna put it on now.

HANNA: Happy Valentine's

GWEN: Thank you

RICK: You must get a lot of questions from young uh, you know, teenage females. What's the one you get like all the time. Style, you must get that a lot. But is there something else that they wanna know?

GWEN: Well, I feel like I've been away for so long we haven't really been doing this much. I think just writing songs with these guys but um.. Lot of them wanna know like, how to get started being a singer and um that always scares me. I just wanna like be no, don't do it. Don't cause it like..honestly, the chances of happening, I mean. None of us expected this to happen to us, you know. We were just doing it just because we were passionate and we couldn't' help ourselves. And success afforded us to continue to have pink hair, you know what I mean? It's like otherwise you kinda have to start growing up a bit. But you know, I dunno. I always discourage people (laughs). But if you're passionate about it and you can't help yourself, you know. Keep going but don't expect anything out of it. That's what I would say

RICK: Sure

GWEN: I don't like to give advice but I would say that. I would say don't' expect anything

RICK: Do you look at what you're doing now and just think it's some sort of extended childhood in a way?

GWEN: Oh yeah.for sure. Definitely

TONY: Especially if we've been playing shows. We gotta hold on to that youthful engergy a little bit longer

RICK: Are you still stretching before the shows?

TONY: Oh yeah. We have to

RICK:Cause of the age thing. Right Adrian? (everyone laughs)

ADRIAN: Oh yeah.

GWEN: We're not that old (I laugh)

RICK: Let's get to another video. It would be off of this one (holds up Return Of Saturn CD) as well as the Go soundtrack. One of my favourite soundtracks um, from last year, you all ready for it? (everyone screams) It's New. It's No Doubt right here on Muchmusic

(They play the video)

RICK: Yeserie do. (A little Ned Flanders goin' on) That was No Doubt off of the Go soundtrack off of the Return of Saturn album as well. I'm gonna take a picture. The flash is ready to go right?

GWEN: Yeah. It's ready. (after the New video. They were just kinda hanging out with the fans and talking about them)

RICK: Ok. Here we go. Smile everyone. Adrian nice white teeth there. I like that. Keep goin'. (takes the pictures of three fans.) Very good. Very good. You can take your seats or if you'd like to stay there. (They sit in front of the band. Of course.) We're going through some paraphernalia (picks up from Tony don't you think?) here. You guys wanna show us some of this?

ADRIAN: This thing right here (holds up a NXD poster)

FAN SITTING IN FRONT: It's my orange crate

RICK: (Gwen holds up a Valentine card someone gave her) Oh happy Valentine's day. That's a whole made Valentine

GWEN: Yeah. O yeah. I got this too (pink hat)

RICK: A hat as well. There are a bunch of things floatin' around here. Now obviously, (Gwen puts on the hat) that's very nice, (points to fan), you made that?

FAN: yup

RICK: Very nice. Obviously, you guys must have this like huge treasure chest filled with stuff that's given to you

GWEN: I have lots of bracelets

RICK: Oh bracelets

GWEN: From people. (Someone passes her one) See I get them everyday. My niece really likes them

RICK: You have more now. How 'bout you guys? What do you guys receive from people?

TONY: Tom always gets girls underwear. Tom has a huge collection of girls underwear. (No Doubt's signing stuff during the interview.)

TOM: Seems little inappropriate I think. Very inappropriate

ADRIAN ; Some of those sex toys I've been getting' too. I thought It was kinda weird. People sending sex toys

RICK: (stuff keeps being passed to the band) Who's been sending that stuff. You right here right? They're all to you. We were all talking earlier you guys are coming back. You're all starting in Chicago I believe. Late March. When can we find you here in Toronto?

GWEN: We'll be here the twenty seventh of March

TONY: At the government

RICK: The government. (everyone screams). I'm sure George will be there. (Everyone laughs) And how about Montreal? Will there be a show in Montreal?

TONY: Not in this leg but the next time. The summer

TOM: Yeah. June, July

RICK: So again, we'd like to thank No Doubt for coming by and being our Valentine on this Valentine's Day. Good luck with everything. Everybody, No Doubt.

GWEN: How come the window's not open this time?

RICK: Well because it's pretty cold out there today

GWEN: O yeah

TONY: We should go out there and say hi to everybody

RICK: How's it goin' everybody? Are we still on? Are we uh..yes we are. Who wants another picture? Ok, You get in the back there. No Doubt, can we do this with you guys?

ADRIAN: Absolutely. (Rick takes picture. Then George comes in. Rick takes another picture)

RICK: Everyone again. Thanks No doubt Thank you guys. I thought we were off the air like two minutes ago. (the band laughs.)
